Remember that AMEX applications last for 90 days

Back in early December, I had had 10 charge cards already and had a feeling my Morgan Stanley 125K app wouldn’t get approved. Sure enough, I was denied due to having too many cards. Eventually in late January, I closed some of my GOLD cards and that freed up a slot. I called up reconsideration at 8pm PT and the lady told me I couldn’t recon the MS card. Someone then told me on Twitter that you CAN recon the MS card, so I called back the next day during work hours and sure enough, recon pushed it through. She told me it could take a few days for the resolution, but as soon as I hung up on her, I got the email saying my application was approved. She then called me back to congratulate me that it was approved. So that application was about 50ish days old.

Another data point, I had signed up my wife for the Business Platinum 170K offer back in late October. Sure enough, she was denied due to having too many cards. We called recon in early February and were able to get it approved, so about 70 days.

The lesson learned here is that even if you are at the max number of AMEX cards and there is a heightened offer, just apply for it and make sure you free up a slot within 90 days to recon it and get it approved.
