Playing the new customer Xfinity game

The last time I blogged about Xfinity was the Xfinity Mobile deal. A few days ago, I called in and cancelled all 7 of my Mobile lines, thus closing out my account. However, the next step was to close my internet line and start over as a new customer since I’ve been paying $88 a month for the 200mb plan ($58) plus UNL addon ($88 a month total.) I’ve tried three times over the last year threatening to cancel to get new customer offers, and all 3 times I was rejected. Here’s the new customer offer by the way:

So on Sunday, I called in to cancel my service. I thought about trying one last time to get a new customer offer with retention, but I also wanted a clean new account for the Mobile offers, so I told the guy I was moving out of country. He cancelled my service, but it wouldn’t be effective until tomorrow, so I still have service until then.

I then immediately went online to sign up as a new customer, but for me to get UNL DATA, I’d have to use their modem instead of mine. That’s not a problem except shipping would take 3-5 days and I didn’t want to be out of internet for that long. So I decided to sign up in store so I could get a modem ASAP. If you do this, I think you should sign up for the new service beforehand so you have the new modem handy before you cancel existing service (remember, you can have at least 2 internet lines at the same address.)

Later that Sunday, I went to a store and signed up for new service. I had my mom with me and decided to sign up under her instead of me just to be extra careful. FUN FACT – I don’t know when they stopped doing this, but they stopped asking for your SSN to run your credit. I think all you need is a new phone number and email address to be considered a new customer. That’s what I would have done if I didn’t have my mom with me. Anyway, I told the guy that I was moving to my address; he asked me when and I said tomorrow. He was able to see that there was already service at the address (probably my wife’s account.) He gave me a new modem and confirmed that it was active and all I had to do was go plug it in at home. Easy as that.

Also, the $55/mo and $20/mo is a bit misleading. First of all, apparently to qualify for the $10 autopay discount, you can no longer use a credit card; well you CAN but it’s only $5 off. To get the full $10 off, you have to add a bank account to autopay (this change happened a few weeks ago he told me.) Secondly, the $20/mo extra discount with Mobile requires you to get UNL data. Since I was only going to pay by the gig, I would only get $10/mo off. After everything is said and done, I’ll be paying just $45/month for 400Mbps with UNL, plus I get HBO MAX and free PEACOCK vs the current $88 that I’m paying. This is a savings of $1032 over 2 years. In two years, I plan on closing my mom’s account and go back to my account since that’s the game they want us to play these days by not offering new customer pricing to retention calls.

  1. You just need to add a bank account to get a $10 discount. But you are allowed to make manual Credit card payments before the Auto debit date.

  2. In TN I have had no problem churning them in the past. Though when my contract is almost up they call me and preemptively offer me a new deal

  3. Where are you from, every state is different wrt deal? In my 40+ years of cable and satellite services I have never been other than a “new subscriber.” 🙂 I try to get a 2yr deal every time to avoid hassle but here in central FL there seems to be no more 2 year deals, it’s either 1 or no contract. I’m due at end of Jan and just need to setup up yet another email and phone number. I get TV as well as internet and am currently paying $135 all-inclusive for 800Mbps tier plus 2 TV boxes and all the extra fees. Cancelling and restarting all those phone lines would seem to be a real PITA though. I left Xfinity Mobile for that reason for USMobile. A lot cheaper and still Verizon MVNO.
