Review – Hamilton the musical

After reselling so many Hamilton tickets, I finally decided to take some of those profits to take the wife to go see the show while it was here in Seattle.  Rather, the wife would have been very upset if I hadn’t taken her.  Since these were my last pair of tickets that I couldn’t even get rid for face value to my friends on Facebook, it was the perfect situation to just use them myself.

Going into the show, I was trying to see if it was over hyped or not.  Literally no one I know have had 1 bad thing to say about it.  Even my IRL friend who got dragged to it by his gf said he would have seen it again.  I mean, those are fighting words.  I didn’t read up on Alexander Hamilton before the show, so was learning about his history through the play.

As the show started, I kept wanting to pick out something that I did NOT like about the show.  I was mentally writing this review as I was watching the show.  Let me first say that I don’t LOVE broadway shows.  As the first half progressed, it occurred to me that it is a bit difficult to understand all of the words in the play due to the songs being “rapped.”  I also didn’t realize the Asian actor was playing George Washington.  FACEPALM.

At intermission, I was still enjoying the show.  However, by the middle of the second half, I started to get antsy.  I felt like an ADD kid getting impatient in his seat.  I was getting claustrophobic and longed for my front mezzanine row A seats that I had for “Book of Mormon.”  I wanted to get out my phone and browse the web like I would do if I was watching a movie at home.  I wanted Aaron Burr to shoot him ASAP.

By the end of it, I ENJOYED the show, but I still don’t understand all the hype.

  1. My wife and I went to see Hamilton in Chicago last year before we knew much about the show. After the show, I am ashamed to admit I listened to the soundtrack WAY more than I care to admit, and now know the words to most of the songs. We went to see it again last week and I really enjoyed it a LOT more since I knew more of the story and what the songs themselves were actually about. I’m someone that hates musicals, but Hamilton is one I would see again and again and not get tired of it.

  2. I also don’t like broadway shows. Unfortunately the wife is a fanatic and I’ve seen almost every single one. The only ones I enjoyed was Lion King and Cats, but only because I liked animals. I think for many people, seeing a broadway show is more about “seeing a broadway show”, than actually seeing a broadway show.

  3. You need to train your ear to understand all the words in the raps. I think I missed a few words and was trying to play catch up to see what I missed. My brother loved the show though.

  4. I went the day after you, but in London. During my lunch time procrastinating I went online to check tickets and found £37 row A mezzanine tickets just a few days before (thanks to returned tickets from #beastfromtheeast). Another couple we met there also happened to stumble upon tickets this way. They said most people they spoke to bought their tickets a year ago. This hyped me up for the show even more.

I thought the first half was interesting and fast paced. As for the second half, I share your sentiments completely. Seemed much slower. Just dragged on and I wanted him to die already. I learned a lot about Hamilton and that I enjoyed. Just don’t understand the hype. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  5. You sure you didn’t want to sell those tickets to that guy with the sign? 🙂 I will be watching mine soon for the first time also.
