Best Buy sends me wrong item

I had ordered a fairly expensive electronic from Bestbuy.com on cyber Monday. Then on Wednesday, I noticed that they used Shipt (the local delivery service) to deliver my order. The box was still sealed when I got it, but I felt it was a bit lighter than what I was expecting. I was expecting about 5 pounds but the box felt like it was under 1 pound. Sure enough, when I opened it, there was this Hello Kitty Kraken headset in it. UGH! I just didn’t need this stress in my life; I was already picturing the local Best Buy manager accussing me of trying to scam them.

Anyway, I brought the box in with the headset to the Best Buy where it was packed (return address on Shipt label.) The supervisor was there and after I told her what happened, she immediately called the store manager. He came over and after she explained it to him, punched in a few things into the screen. Then he mentioned this happened to someone else last week where they ordered a Macbook but got Airpods. I asked him if it was using Shipt and he said no it was from the warehouse. I’m sure his case was easier since UPS/Fedex would have a weight on the package whereas Shipt doesn’t!

After a minute or so, he scanned in the Kraken headset and mentioned that it hadn’t been scanned (sold?) since October. I was a bit worried at that point since maybe he thinks I just threw in a random old Kraken headset into the box and kept my item. He then paged 2 random names into his mic. One of the [packer] guys came up and after the manager held up the Kraken headset, the guy nodded and said, “Oh yeah, I remember us packing that on Monday.” Then he or the manager muttered something to the effect that my item should still be in the back. The manager walks off for about 5 minutes and brings me my item and off I went. I then asked the packer what happened and he said they were just slammed on Monday due to Cyber Monday and just made a mistake.

While this worked out fairly painlessly for me, it could have gone south at another store. A few lessons learned here. One, if you know your package is off weight wise (5 pounds vs <1 pound is a big difference,) don’t even open the package and just take it to the store and open it up in the store. Or maybe video yourself opening the package so that there is less doubt that you’re trying to scam the store. Two, definitely act fast. If I had waited say a month, then that packer definitely would have forgotten that he packed a Kraken headset a month ago. Needless to say, go back to the store that packed your order. Not sure how you’d handle this if the warehouse sent the wrong item (I guess you could argue the weight was not right.) I had also used gift cards, which meant I had to be made right at the store since I couldn’t charge back at all. I’ve heard too many horror stories of Shipt packages going missing.
