AMEX clawed back my AU bonuses after card closure

This one is a bit odd and might be an anomaly but I want to report about it anyway. I had gotten the Hilton Biz card back in July 2022. I then got the 99 AU offer of $50 cb after $1K spend. I did the spend in Nov-Dec. They gave me the first 20 x $50 as I spent on the cards, but the last $50 credit was on December 2. I vaguely remember hearing of other reports on the delay of the bonuses.

Anyhow, come January they gave me a ‘CASH REBATE DB ADJ’ for $3950 of the 79 x $50 AU bonuses as one line item instead of individual ‘K3LB:0001 50.00 CREDIT’ I was made whole at the time. Then come July, I cancelled the card after the renewal hit. Fast forward to October, 3 months later, it seems they charged me for the $3950. I’m not sure if it’s because I didn’t hold the AU’s for a year or if they decided to look into the ‘CASH REBATE DB ADJ.’ I believe if those $3950 were $50 credits like the ones in 2022, then I’d be fine.

I honestly don’t know what the lesson learned here is. If you got a big line item rebate for those AU bonuses, I’d eat the AF for another year. Paying $95 to not risk $3950 is a no brainer. Wow. At least they didn’t claw back the HH points so at least all that spend wasn’t for naught.

  1. This worries me as i have 2 platinum cards where i added 5 AU each to earn 200k MR points. I guess i will have to remember to keep the cards open and eat the fee.

    1. But is it the same with the online offers as it is with the call-in? I also had 5 online AU’s from last year where they were delayed a month so I when I closed the parent in the next few weeks, the AU’s would be at less than 365 days. Obviously keeping the parent card wouldn’t be worth paying another annual fee.
