Using ChatGPT to plan out my travel daily itinerary

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard of ChatGPT, which I’d say is a revolutionary technology. It seems with every iteration, you can do more and more with it and we’re just scratching the surface. One aspect that is interesting to us is how to use it to plan travel activities. It used to do a pretty laborous process to create a daily itinerary. Now you can do it within minutes. One trick I learned recently from Tiktok is that you can have ChatGPT output it as a table. So here’s what I did:

Not bad for a first pass (I clipped off day 3 due to it being too long.) I realized I left out the start time so I asked it to add it.

I think it missed the mark with the Haleakala sunrise since we’d have to start that at something like 4AM or so. Anyway, I noticed it skipped lunch every day so I told it to add it.

It was stupid to add lunch as a column (well, I wouldn’t say stupid; I just needed it to be more clear.) I think it assumed that I’d be at the attraction and then I’d grab food there whereas I was expecting to drive to lunch, so I made it change that:

I then asked it to remove the lunch COLUMN and I asked it to add a 4th day and add a luau activity too. I then asked it to break down the road to hana day 2 for me:

I could go on but I think you get the picture now. Such a powerful tool.

  1. I am curious what happens when we lose the ability to build and comprehend a chart or table (or whatever) for ourselves. How will we tell the tool to build something that we can interpret? For instance, I recently had to build an itinerary to board a cruise ship, so I worked backwards from the boarding time to when I needed to catch a shuttle at the closest airport, which dictated arrival of aircraft, taking into account picking up luggage, deplaning and food, which I could then use to figure out when to leave my home which is at a minimum 1 hour and maximum 2 hours from the airport by car to decide which departure aircraft to book. I am sure ChatGPT could have done this for me, but if I was unable to do it for myself, then I would be unable to check for myself that I was on schedule. Anyway, just something to think about before we hand over the keys to the robot.

    1. Back in the day, people used maps and had to draw out interstate travel by hand. Now we have Google Maps due to technological advancements. Same thing. Your scenario could have easily been taken care of by ChatGPT. Does it make us stupid for not being able to read a map these days or is that ability no longer useful? Maybe having to plan out itineraries with hours of research is no longer a useful skill down the road.
