Review – Westin Madrid, Spain

Introduction

We stayed here in early July 2018.  I had booked this on points – 58,000 points for 5 nights.  Rates were ridiculously high due to it being the summer.  I also booked this 6+ months ahead; if you book too late, award rooms may no longer be available.

Getting to hotel

We took the subway to the hotel.  I was afraid of the 2 transfers, but we only had carry-ons, and it wasn’t that bad.  It’s not Tokyo-sized stations.  The transfers were all – walk up a flight of stairs and down the next one.  You could probably do this with 1 check-in bag, but 2 would be a haul.  Once you exit out of the subway station, you’ll be in a plaza.  Just walk south along the main road.  For some reason, Gmaps made me walk the back roads for some stupid reason.  Also, when you get to the corner where the hotel should be, make a right down the road and the lobby will be on your left.  Don’t be like us and walk past the Starbucks and around the entire block to get to the entrance.

Checkin

We got there early; I think it was around 11AM, and our suite wasn’t available yet.  Apparently another SPG Platinum member had a late checkout, so our room wouldn’t be ready until 4PM.

Wifi

It was fine; no big issues.  I think there was a limit of 3 devices though…

Room

Our suite was very nice.  I loved the 2 toilets.  We maybe used the “living room” once.  The view was just okay.

Breakfast

As a Platinum member, I chose the free breakfast buffet.  To be honest, I think the buffet was just okay.  They had an omelette station that you could order from, but it was always crowded so I never ordered anything.  The “Asian” items consisted of white rice, congee and stir fried vegetables I think.  It did have lots of good fruit and Iberico ham on the buffet.  My breakfast every day was – some ham, some cheese, and a scoop of the nasty boxed eggs.  Then a plate of fruit.  My big gripe about the breakfast was that NOTHING CHANGED ALL 4 DAYS.  I expected them to at least change the one Asian item of stir fried vegetables to something else.  Also, I expected to see passion fruit on the buffet for some reason since Europeans loved the passion fruit in the Seychelles, but alas, none to be found.

Conclusion

Besides the lack of different items on the buffet (shouldn’t be an issue if you’re staying 2-3 nights,) I thought the hotel was great – great location, suite upgrade, decent food on breakfast.
