My first digital goods purchase

Farmville

Introduction

My wife used to play Farmville.  She was addicted!  So addicted she even paid money for items in the game.  To this day, she won’t tell me how much she spent on the game.  She just says, “You don’t want to know…” and she’s probably right.  I really don’t want to know.

It’s just entertainment

For years, I told her how crazy she was for spending real money on a digital item that she’ll never be able to touch and hold.  I held that belief up until yesterday… when I bought $20 worth of Pokemon coins.  Now, hear me out.  I rationalized it by this – if I spend $10 for a 2 hour movie that I never got to touch or hold, then how is that any different than buying Pokemon coins?  Both were forms of entertainment.  An argument could be made that I’ll get more enjoyment out of these Pokemon coins than I did watching “Finding Nemo 2.”  At least I’ll still be playing Pokemon a month from now versus the 90 minutes of entertainment for Nemo 2.

So am I crazy for having spent $20 on a digital good?  Am I just deluding myself?

  1. I harass my spouse for spending real money on games just like you. I never spend a cent on them. If they get so hard I can’t continue without real money I remove them. But you had me thinking when you mentioned a movie. I do go a few times a year to a movie. And I walk away with nothing. So there goes that…

    1. I hit that point with Diner Dash. Game kept updating and needed you to buy gold coins to complete levels. I even commented to them them that they weren’t giving out enough free coins. They said they took a note of my comment and they did change things a bit. Not enough for me to continue so I stopped playing it.

  2. You are not crazy! Spending money on “intangible” things is better than collecting stuff in your house that will just be taking up space later. We all probably have too much stuff that we can touch. Spending money on massages, plane tickets, restaurants, car washes are all things that will not clutter your home.
I agree that buying Pokemon coins is a form of entertainment and can be compared to spending money on movie theater, cable tv, Netflix, etc. People do not seem to have an issue with spending over $100 each month on digital movie/tv services so why is digital gameplay any different?

  3. She probably spent less then you did on your dad’s credit card for comics haha. I think it is the same as spending money on a video game etc. I may not agree with your choice of game 🙂 but I don’t think it is a bad thing.

  4. Moral of the story – never ask wife about money spent. It will eventually come back to bite you.

    😀
