Hyatt French Quarter New Orleans Review

Introduction

I had a friend’s wedding in New Orleans and while I originally was going to stay 3 nights at the Roosevelt, I decided to switch one night to the Hyatt since I had a free Chase Hyatt annual certificate that was about to expire.

Location

I had a tough time decide between this Hyatt French Quarter location or the Hyatt Regency.  I’m glad I decided to stay at this one.  It was near the beginning of Bourbon street, right next to Canal street.  Now while I am probably too old for Bourbon street, I think it’s still a great tourist attraction.  Now would I stay here again if I didn’t have my free night?   Probably not; I would have stayed at wherever gave me the highest point value out of SPG, Hilton, and Hyatt in the best location.

Upgradeability

Of course I am a lowly Platinum member from having the Hyatt Visa card.  Upon checkin, I was told I was upgraded to a courtyard room.  This was located on the 2nd floor and I could walk outside my door and be “poolside.”  We never did that.  We also never saw anyone in the pool.

Decor

I thought the decor of the lobby was very modern.  It reminded me a little bit of the Hyatt Andaz in Maui with the cool little cafe.  However, once you stepped in the elevator, you were instantly reminded that this was no Hyatt Andaz Maui.  While they tried to put a facelift in the elevator as well as the room, it’s all about the details – the elevator panel looked old, the walls in the bathroom were not perfectly straight, and the cabinetry in the room still looked “old.”  But hey, this was a category 4 hotel, and while the lobby exceeded my expectations, the room just only ‘met expectations.’

Other tidbits

  • The wifi was adequate; not blazing fast nor was it noticeably slow
  • There was no free water for Platinum members.  They had 2 bottles of Aquafina for $4 each.  However, right outside my room, in the vending machine, you could have bought a bottle of water for $1.50.  Go figure Hyatt.
  • The curtains could be closed for full pitch black.  You know what I’m talking about.
  • We had 2 double beds, and my wife decided to sleep in my bed instead of her own.  The bed was sunken in and so because there were 2 people in it, you could feel yourself sorta sliding down into the sinkhole in the middle.
  • It wasn’t too noisy (from the street or from neighbors) but that’s YMMV depending on the room you get.
  • I didn’t see a lounge or maybe because I was only Platinum, they didn’t bother to tell me about it.
