About

I am a miles and points collector.  I also love ‘hot deals.’  I got started back in 1999 when Staples had $168 off $168 coupons and Value America also had ridiculous $100 off coupons.  I try to maximize and optimize every deal possible.  I used to buy MINT coins, but I wasn’t as serious as the hard core guys just because I didn’t know how to really maximize it at the time.  I did a few mileage runs – the most memorable was when I could fly Cincinnati-Los Angeles for $850 round trip for business.  However, I booked a Cincinnati-Anchorage-Los Angeles-Hawaii-Cincinnati all for $825, thus saving the company money and racking up 30,000 Delta Skymiles since they used to have 2X miles promos back in the day.

Another time, Delta was giving free Silver Medallion if you took a Pittsburgh to Cincinnati flight.  I gathered 5 friends, and we all rented a van to drive one way from Cincinnati to Pittsburgh.  Then we all hopped on that short flight back home (the plane was mostly empty except for us).  Sure enough, we got Silver Medallion just for that one flight.   I also did credit card churning (maybe 4-6 a year), but like I said, nothing serious.   However, when I got engaged in 2011, that’s when I got really serious and turned this into a hobby since I wanted to go to a really nice honeymoon in business/first class instead of the typical Hawaii.

These days, I apply for about ~10 credit cards a year for myself and probably that same amount for my wife.  I’ve probably amassed about 5 million miles and points in the last 3 years.  We went to Tahiti/Bora Bora on our honeymoon all on miles and points.  Then we did a trip to Venice-Florence-Rome-Mykonos-Santorini-Greece all on miles and points.  And we just got back from a Maldives trip as well.  We’re doing South Africa/Hong Kong/Dubai and then Australia/New Zealand/Japan in 2015.  We love to travel and now we look forward to the flights more than the destination.  I’m a ‘planner’ so if you want my itinerary for those places, just let me know at vinh@milesperday.com.

This blog is meant to show my family and friends how they too can travel the world on the cheap.  With manufactured spending avenues dying, I’ve been focusing more on shopping portals and reselling.  Thus for 2015, I’m going to track how many miles and points I’ll earn through all the various avenues to build miles and points out there.

By the way, I hate it when I ask bloggers a question and get no response (no mentioning any names.)  I enjoy helping people; I may not give you the full circles and arrows, but at least I’ll point you in the right direction, so if you need credit card advice, awards advice, just sent me a note to vinh@milesperday.com, and I’ll do my best to help you out.

  1. Hi Vinh! Just passing through and I wanted to thank you for that comment at the end of your bio above re: hating when you ask a blogger a question and you get no response. I’ve had that happen to me so many times so I don’t even bother reading their blogs anymore. Looking forward to your review on Australia/NZ. I’ll be heading there myself, but Jan/Feb 2016!

  2. Can’t subscribe in Firefox. Clicking Subscribe button does nothing. Had to launch Chrome to subscribe. Looks like interesting stuff regardless though.

    1. Glenn, did you subscribe while trying to comment or on the right side box? Thanks for putting in the extra effort to subscribe though!
