I had gotten my wife the Spark Elite card and was approved on 11/3/22. I had been using the card just fine for the past 2 months, but then the other day I got an email saying she had redeemed $450 cashback to the card. I thought that was odd since I didn’t initiate that conversion. So I logged in and saw this:
It seems she’s been shut down. That was nice of them to convert the points to cashback versus just reposessing the points (looking at you Shiti.) Not sure how/why she got the axe when I’m still alive.
The odd thing was that I booked a Cap1 hotel of $446 on 12/19 that I should have gotten the $300 travel credit that I never got (this exact same hotel worked on my account to get the travel credit.) I couldn’t access the travel portal online after being shut down, so I had to call in to get that reservation cancelled and refunded. Not sure if paying the $395 fee was worth the $450 cashback (sure it’s a net positive but it wasn’t worth the headache.) If I had gotten the travel credit too, then it wouldn’t have been as bad.
The lesson learned here is if you were once banned from Capital One, it would behoove you to get the SUB ASAP just in case they figure out you should be axed.
They axed me in just 4 days.
Hard pull wasted and card showed up in credit report after 2 months .
I was shut down 4 years before.
