Need something to binge watch? Try a Korean drama

The first Korean movie that I ever watched was “My Sassy Girl.” It was a movie that almost every Asian I met growing up watched… well that and “Better Luck Tomorrow.” Over the years, I watched movies like “Oldboy,” but never watched any of the TV dramas. That was until a few months ago. A friend said she was getting into Korean dramas lately, and another friend recently suggested I give “Crash Landing on You” a try on Netflix.

If you’ve never seen a Korean drama TV series before, I highly suggest you give it a shot. Fair warning – this will consume 16 hours of your life! Having to read subtitles suck since you have to give the show almost 100% attention, but it’s worth it. The genre is so much different than what you’ve ever seen before from an American TV series. I’m trying to think of something that would be similar in the US, but can’t think of any. The closest thing I can think of is the movie “Serendity” – imagine that 2 hour movie stretched out over 16 hours and that’s sort of what you get with a Korean drama.

After I finished “Crash,” I went down the Kdrama rabbit hole. I then watched “Itaewon Class” and “Something in the Rain” (both on Netflix) and enjoyed them both. Next thing you know, I paid for a Viki subscription and now I’ve started on “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim.” I’m not sure how long this Korean drama obsession will last, but so far it’s been fun.
