Review – Dstage restaurant Madrid, Spain

Introduction

Dstage is a Michelin 2 star restaurant in Madrid.  We went on a reco from a reader in July of 2018.  I had an AMEX Plat concierge book it for me.  It was a bad sign that AMEX was able to score a good dining reservation on the first try, then get the date wrong, and then subsequently scored the correct date on the first try.

Getting to restaurant

We stayed at the Westin Madrid and just walked there.  It was probably a 20 minute walk, but we wanted to a) get hungry and b) walk it off when we were done.  We didn’t really regret that decision.  It was a semi-safe walk although it was surprising that when we got done at 10PM, the streets were mostly empty.

Experience

When we got to the restaurant, we were seated in the lobby area, where we were offered, “What would you like to drink?”  This question always annoys me because I never know if I have to pay for the drinks or not.  Luckily, this was one was free (we chose cava.)  After that, our first entree came out, which was pretty cool since it came on some liquid nitrogen.  Was a squid dish and pretty good.  After that, we were brought to the kitchen where they mashed some fresh shrimp and gave it to us to eat.  After that, we got about 10 courses at our table.  The problem is I don’t like avocado or uni, which were 2 of the main courses.  We had the wine pairings, which I thought were pretty good.  I thought the cotton candy like dessert was the star of the meal.  Lastly, they ended the meal with the garlic looking ice cream, which OF COURSE GAVE YOU GARLIC BREATH.  Who wants garlic breath to end a date?  Horrible idea.

I thought it was a pretty good value at $430 all in for 2 people with wine pairing.  Of course I could just be bitter that AMEX couldn’t get me DiverXO resevations.  Would I go back?  Probably not.  Do I recommend it?  Only if you can’t get a reservation at DiverXO or elsewhere.
