bubly Sparkling Water vs La Croix

As most of you know, I love La Croix.  I plan on writing a post ranking all the flavors one day.  A few weeks ago, Amazon sent me a coupon for $5 off bubly sparking water due to a Dash button no long working. Apparently Pepsi makes bubly to compete with La Croix.  I think the design on the cans, while cute, looks too much like a Kroger or Safeway brand, which means people may gloss over it in the grocery aisle.  Anyhow, I chose to buy the sample pack, and I’ve had 3 flavors so far (orange, lime, and mango) and wanted to write a quick review.

Long story short – I’ve been drinking the mango flavor of La Croix for the past week just because it was available on Boxed a while back.  It is one of the flavors that I don’t particularly like just because it doesn’t taste like mango at all.  Thus, I was excited to try the bubly mango flavor first.  On first taste, I immediately thought it tasted more like mango than La Croix’s.  On the other hand, it doesn’t have as much carbonation as La Croix.  Eventually, I tasted the orange and lemon flavors later in the week.  Just like the mango, I felt the taste was closer to the real fruit.  I’m no chemist, but my guess is there is a scientific scale measuring flavor vs carbonation (more carbonation = less flavor aka La Croix.)

The question now is – which do I prefer?  Well it depends.  If I want a mango flavor, I’m definitely picking bubly.  If I want a lemon or orange, it depends on if I’m in the mood for more carbonation or more flavor.  Did I just eat some MSG Chinese stir fry?  I may go with bubly.  Did I just come in from the summer sun and want something cool and refreshing?  Then I go with La Croix.  Is a case of buly $.50 cheaper than La Croix?  I go with bubly.

  1. just give me a Coke with extra corn fructose, please. if you go into a NYC Pizzeria and order a slice and Mango LaCroix, they will throw you the hell out!

  2. have you tried Spindrift? That’s my fav sparkling water right now. I also love that it has just carbonated water and real squeezed fruit (not concentrate, no sugar or other additives). It’s not as sweet as La Croix, and just very refreshing. They even have brewed tea + lemon carbonated (my current favorite). I get mine from Trader Joe’s, but they are also in Costco and other places (on Amazon, too, but they are more expensive on Amazon).

  3. As a lifelong sparking water aficionado, I can spend more than 333 words on this topic. In short, flavored waters such as La Croix are simply too sweet for my taste and they do not quench my thirst as well as traditional sparkling water. With that said my kids enjoy them and I do drink the multi flavored La Croix drinks including. Unfortunately it’s very, very hard to consume La Croix. La Croix is a well established bleach brand.
