Reselling my Sears 3rd quarter VIP benefit

Quick Update – If you’re reading this at 8AM PST, remember, 9AM PST is the Kaskade ticket hour!

Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming.  I know when you read that headline, you thought to yourself, “WHAT?  I thought he was going to stop reselling.”  I did!  Well, sort of.  I still have lots of benefits and gift cards that I want to use up so I can finally quit.  One of those benefits is the Shop Your Way VIP quarterly benefits… the one where you have to spend $10K a year to achieve Platinum status.  Don’t ask me what I bought.  Just know I bought a lot of it and made a nice margin off of it!

Anyway, I had been lazy to select my Sears VIP Platinum benefit when the quarter started in July.  Usually procrastinating is a bad thing, but it seems Sears has gotten lax on the quantity available (that or they are adding new items throughout the quarter.)  At that time, I couldn’t find anything good that I could resell to maximize my VIP benefit, so I just left it as is.  The other day, I finally logged on to redeem the benefit before I forgot and found this deal on a Kitchenaid mixer.  There was a 50% back on an RCA 65% LED TV which would have made the TV about ~$400.  I thought about that deal, but I had just gotten an RCA 55″ for about ~$275 from the previous quarter and really didn’t need ANOTHER TV.  Anyway, I went ahead and chose the mixer since it was 100% free (assuming you actually can use SYYR points.)

Here it is when checking out.  Now here’s the thing about Sears SYYR points.  Initially I had redeemed the $7.65 points.  When I did that my ‘back in points’ dropped by $10 to $326.  It makes no sense to redeem $8 and lose $10.  WTF SEARS?!?  In the past, I was able to immediately remove the point usage, but it looks like Sears changed its web site in the past 6 months or so.  Now to remove point usage, you have to close the tab and start over.  That’s what I did anyway so I could go through the Discover shopback portal.

Here it is after I’ve checked out:

The full math here:

  • Paid $325.79
  • $335 SYYR points back
  • $30 (10% Discover portal back)
  • $30 (double Discover back promo)
  • $30 (when I bought the $300 Sears GC via the Discover portal 10%)
  • $225 (Amazon FBA after fees and inbound shipping)

So I should be getting $650 back from the entire deal ($615 if you assume I can only covert 90% of SYYR to cash).  It cost me $325 for the item, so a nice ~$300 profit after everything is said and done.  Of course now I have to spend $335 at Sears, but so be it.  #CostofDoingBusiness
