This was a bit unexpected. I have been carrying their 2% card with a $30K CL for years now. It was mostly a sock drawer card until I started to use them for Costco. Back in the unlimited 5% cashback grocery days, they were okay with cycling and so I cycled my 2% card pretty heavily. Let’s go back to this year:
- January $38K
- March $21K
- April $69K
- May $70K
- June $0
- August $88K
- Sept $155K
- October $168K
- November $103K
Talking to some other folks, the cycling wasn’t the culprit. It was because you could pay WF with a debit card. Yes, I publicized that because if you want to maintain your account, you SHOULDN’T be doing that. I don’t know why they are mad by people doing this. If they didn’t like it, just STOP TAKING PAYMENTS like your competitor just did.
Anyway, I felt no hurt over this. Well, I am a bit sad because they’ll eventually close my checking account and that’s where I’ve been feeding my money orders. It’s great because the ATM takes like 30 at a time whereas my local CU only takes 10 at a time, so it’s just more time spent at the ATM now. I mean, there was no other purpose for their 2% cashback card, so good riddance. This is the 2nd casualty due to “my precious…” (my wife’s BOA ban being the first.)
Soon enough the only card you will have is your EBT card , Vinh.
Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear about the shut down. 🙏🏻 This is the first time I’ve heard of WF shutting anyone down for paying by debit.
I’m curious how you determined that the SD was not due to cycling? Because running $168k on a $30k credit limit does seem pretty intense. Even if debit payments were the culprit, I wonder if your situation is more of an outlier due to the sheer volume you were doing. I basically only do monthly debit card payments on my Bilt card which is just a few thousand per month on my rent spend (which is well under my CL).
Are you hearing other people getting shut down for making debit card payments as well? And if yes were they similarly paying off 6 figure bills by debit card each month? I would be most concerned with shut downs where the monthly spend was relatively low. 🧐
I’ve heard of others who didn’t cycle
Weird people abuse a card and then whine when they are shutdown.
No one was whining dumbass
