You want me to do what?

So I made a new Staples account to take advantage of the ABG monthly credits. I used a new email, different name, same address, different phone number, my wife’s AMEX (new to any Staples accounts.) I then placed the order which was subsequently cancelled. I called them up the next day to inquire what happened. The rep forwarded me to his supervisor who then asked me to call me back on the phone number that is listed under the AMEX card’s account. I was confused and said, “You mean the phone number on the Staples account?” She said, “No, the phone number on the AMEX.” I was still confused since I had never heard of a request like this before. My wife was at work, so I couldn’t call back immediately to resolve the issue.

I’m just still in shock about the request. I know AMEX gets L3 data from Staples, but I had never heard of a vendor knowing the phone number listed under the credit card account. I wasn’t even aware that AMEX and/or other credit cards were doing that. Wild!
