Has AMEX moved to a 1 per 90 day rule

Yesterday, I applied for a Schwab card since I currently have over 1M MR and want to cash that out to Schwab. I currently have 8 charge cards and 4 credit cards with AMEX. My last charge card approval was the Morgan Stanley Platinum card back in early June 2023. The last time I applied for a Schwab card was back in October 2020 and I closed it back in October 2022. After I pushed submit, I was expecting a popup saying I wasn’t qualified for the sub due to having the card before, but I never got the popup. It went immediately to pending. I then decided for shits and giggles to try to apply for a Business Platinum card. The last approval for one of those was back in March 2023. That also went to pending.

I then called up AMEX the next day and the overseas rep told me that since I had gotten the MS card a few months ago, I could not get another Platinum card again. I said “Even the business?” and he said, “Yeah, any flavor of Platinum – Schwab, MS, Business, etc.” He said I could try again once it’s been 90 days, which should be in a few weeks.

I had always assumed that you could get a Platinum and at least a business Platinum within 90 days, but I guess not. Looking back at my approvals over the years, I guess I never did apply for a personal Platinum and business Platinum within 90 days. I had been applying for the Morgan Stanley card which was churnable but I guess no longer. Either way, I still find it strange I didn’t get the popup on the Schwab and am excited to see what happens when I recon it in a few weeks.

Disclaimer – This is no longer relevant. A personal Plat and a business Plat are treated independently now.

  1. I applied for marriott bevy and got approved, 5 days later applied for the brilliant and got a denial letter saying I applied for the “same type of card within the last few month”. Recon failed at first saying it was a duplicate application, after I telling the rep it was a different Marriott card, he put me on hold for a few minute and came back and told me I have to wait 90 days to apply for the brilliant. I searched the internet but couldn’t find any data points on this. I only see people being rejected for applying for the same card in 90 days and denied for the same reason. My question is should I apply for the marriott biz card? And will I get the same denial? It has been less than 90 days since my marriott bevy approval. Is this also the case when you apply for two hilton cards in 90 days?

    1. This is the first I’ve heard of Marriott cards. Maybe they’re more strict with Marriott cards over Hilton cards; I’m not sure.

    1. Yes that’s the rule for CREDIT. For charge, I assumed you could get a personal plat and biz plat within 90 days but that’s no longer the case.
