Safeway J4U changes

It seems Safeway pushed out a lot of updates as of 5/1/23, so let’s talk about them:

First off, $ off rewards, which used to be weekly is now monthly, just like the free item coupons.

Secondly, you can now clip multiples of the same reward, up to 4 max. You wouldn’t want to clip 3 x $2 rewards, but it’s possible. This is good because if you have say 50 rewards, you can now clip 4 x $20 rewards, so you can spend $80 in one shot. Previously, you could only get $64 if you clipped all the $ off rewards in one week. This also lets you redeem multiples of the same $ off reward in the same month.

This also works with free items too in case you wanted multiple mac and cheese boxes.

This one is old news, but they let you unclip rewards now. This was pushed out about 2 months ago, but I never made a post about it; essentially if you clip some free mac&cheese, but decide you no longer want it, now you can unclip that coupon and get your reward points back, whereas before, you were kind of screwed.

It’s good to see that Safeway is still making improvements to the J4U program, even with the looming Kroger merger. I just hope Kroger decides to adopt the J4U program instead of their fuel rewards program (like when AA adopted the USAirways system when they bought USAir.)

  1. Thanks for the heads up. I am hopeful too that Kroger doesn’t nerf the J4U and changes over to a system like Safeway. I rack up tons of Kroger fuel points and basically give them all away. Would be nice to use them towards food purchases.
