My last Ebay ban was back in April 2020 where not only did they get my account, they got any associated accounts with it (diff Ebay accounts associated with those Paypal accounts.) I think I waited until about September to open a new account. This was before they forced managed payments on all accounts (this is key.) I had a spare iPad laying around and created the account on there. I used a fake business I created and a clean PO BOX number. I think I went about a month before that account got shut down. I THINK they got me because my old banned account used the same WIFI one day and I think that’s how they linked the new account to the old one. The key thing you need to know is that Ebay does IP checks as well as device ID checks as well as the usual name/address/credit card matching. I can’t confirm that they do any of that, but you have to assume that they do if you want to get back on. Meaning if your dead account is on computer A that is still browsing the web under internet Z, don’t ever try to log into new account on computer A or don’t even get on the same internet Z on the new account!
Anyway, I think I finally got back in around mid 2021 when I found that they had moved all new accounts to managed payments. This is a key datapoint because if your banned account was on managed payments, which requires last 4 of SSN to sign up, you’re going to have major issues signing up a new account (maybe use a new EIN.) However, if your ban was on the old Paypal, then it’ll be a lot easier for you since Ebay doesn’t have your SSN yet. So what I did was I grabbed one of my new Comcast iPhones and I NEVER WENT on WIFI with it. I deleted my home wifi so that it couldn’t connect to it. By this point, I had changed computers and I’m sure my router’s IP changed multiple times, but I wasn’t going to chance it. I also signed up my wife’s SSN for the Ebay managed payments. I picked a clean PO BOX in my zip code as the address. I used a credit card that was new. So to Ebay, this new account was definitely from a new person and there was no way they could link it back to my banned account. The account is still up after 1.5 years. Knock on wood.
The drawback is that it is more tedious to do listings and admin stuff since I can never log into a desktop, but listing from the app is easier since the phone has the camera built in. I use Pirateship to create labels. I then scan the barcodes for tracking into the Ebay app. I answer messages in the app. I can’t make multi variant listings in the app, but I don’t need to make that many of those. You CAN log into the Ebay power seller view if you use the phone browser; it sucks that you have to zoom in and out but you make do. I did eventually get a 2nd Comcast internet account, which the Ebay phone connects to that WIFI. If I were to do it again, I’d use an Ipad again instead of the small screen iPhone mini.
Thanks again!
Why not just sell on Mercari? Are the prices that much higher on eBay?
How have you handled the ID requirement that eBay has started to check once a year now? Does it not matter that your eBay selling address doesn’t match the ID address?
I haven’t seen that yet
Got it – yeah it’s coming in rolling waves- got mine that have to do by 1/23. Here’s a blog post that sounds like it been happening for a few months now https://www.ecommercebytes.com/2022/12/28/ebay-demands-for-photo-ids-leave-sellers-uncomfortable/
Prob has something to do with the 1099-K limit and they need your info to send them out.
Have you tried begging for forgiveness for the issue causing the banned account? I had one account suspended and it took some time but they finally let me back in. I made a mistake and never again would I do it. They sound just as hard to avoid linkage as Amazon.
Yea I wrote to the VP and an admin called me. Told me it wasn’t due to that one incident, but that and a few incidents prior to that (like when North Face shut down my listings for using their stock photos and some other stupid incident) caused the shutdown to be final.
Crazy. I see that stock image usage for anything imaginable, instead of actual pictures all day, every day. I guess most companies do not go after people like that. Sorry for your situation.
It depends on the brand. Most don’t care but then once in a while, you’ll find one that does.
