Well I’ve hit a new low. Discover shut me down a few days ago. It was a bit of a shock to me since they are ususally okay with MS, so either they changed their algorithm or more likely, it was a combination of things that I did which I’ll detail so you can avoid doing it.
6/21 – $3K charge (remember I have a $3K CL)
6/23 – paid off the $3K from bank
7/5 – $3K charge (it took them nearly 2 weeks to clear my CL which I thought was surprisingly long, but I figured it was due to new account.)
7/6 – pushed $6K of payments
7/8 – surprisingly noticed I had CL, so $3K CHARGE
7/9 – another $3K CHARGE
7/12 – paid the $3K from bank account
7/12 – Redeemed my 1.5%
7/13 – Pushed a $100 payment.
Sometime between 7/11 and 7/13 was when they axed me. If you’re thinking, “Well no shit. You kept maxing out the CL every time it cleared up.” YES, I know that. But that has never been a problem in the past. Plus, they took like 2 weeks to clear my push payment so it’s not like I could cycle daily.
What do I think did me in? It was either a combination of the push payments (maybe they didn’t like the push payments) or it was the negative balance of $6K which enabled me to charge nearly $9K in a matter of 4 days. What would I do differently next time? I probably wouldn’t do any push payments so I don’t go negative. Probably wait for charge to post, then pull the payment from bank, and then wait for CL to clear. Oh well; not sure how long the ban will last. I was a bit sad for an hour or two, but I realized I hadn’t used any of my Discover cards in over 2 years, so it’s not like I’m missing out on much here.
Did Discover shut down both your credit card with them? Did you have Discover checking account?
No it seems my other card is still alive since a 7/26 charge just posted. And my checking account is still alive too I guess. They haven’t sent me a letter yet.
How do you manufacture 3k spend over and over???
I am going to ask the uneducated question. How do you create $3k of manufactured spend over and over again?
Buy giftcards and convert them to money orders
You scammers that use MS and cycle payments deserve whatever you get. I’m in favor of not just shutdowns but clawing back any benefits derived. You ruin things for the rest of us with your shady dealings. There is always some low life looking to take advantage of things I guess. Frankly not sure how you live with yourself since you obviously have very low morals to do this crap.
Most probably the negative balance. I had a card you can charge multiple credit line without issue. Then a few days after a negative balance (like -2.5k due to extra Walmart billpay), my account was shut down.
Thanks. Yeah I was running a negative balance for a while, so that could be it. I know BOA doesn’t like it either. Thx for the helpful comment.
You think the self referral played a role at all?
Don’t think so Mark… I mean it could have been but don’t think so. Other actions were more heinous (negative balance and cycling.)
Why would not use them for the 5% categories and that’s it? That error is too much work.
Because this is the 3% Miles card
All that effort for 1.5%? But to your question, impossible to advise before clarity. Your description is confusing, early on referring to “new account,” versus later indicating “never been a problem in the past.” Never a problem with Discover? If yes, so why a new account? With some other bank, what would another bank’s approach matter with Discover?
3%. I’ve had this card in the past and it was fine. This is the 3rd iteration with it.
K. But for my understanding why did you write “ 7/12 – Redeemed my 1.5%?”
Bec the Miles card gives you 1.5% NOW and then 1.5% when your first year is up.
I think what the other poster is saying is if you got shutdown before one year, you wouldn’t get your 1.5% match. So in that case, all of the effort would have been wasted.
Well I didn’t expect to be shut down so 3% was worth it.
