I had cancelled my T-Mobile service back in September of 2020. At the time, I had a $1K credit balance due to a Chase Freedom 5X quarterly deal. They sent me a prepaid return label for the free WIFI router that they let me borrow many years ago. I mailed that back to them in a timely fashion. I then sat back and waited for a check for $1K.
Sure enough, the check never came. In the first 3-6 months after my account cancellation, I’d still get a bill showing the $1K credit. Eventually they stopped sending the bill. Here we are 9 months later and I still hadn’t gotten my money back. I tweeted their support team online and at first they wanted me to send me a VGC. Then after a few more messages, the lady said she could ACH me the money. Great! Then a few days later, she asked if she could refund it back to the last used credit card. I said SURE, but I hadn’t fully read the message and assumed I was getting an ACH.
After a few weeks of not seeing the ACH, I re-read the message and then tried to figure out which cc it was (I had forgotten about the Chase offer and hoped I hadn’t used a VGC to pay the bill.) Luckily I figured out it was the Freedom card and noticed the $1K credit on there and I was good to go.
A few lessons learned here – 1. Pretty shady of TMobile to never send me the check. I figured after 3-6 months, I’d automatically get one. I’m sure if I never reached out, the money would have been escheated to the state and then I’d have to claim down the road. The 2nd lesson is – uhm try not to have a big credit balance on your mobile phone carrier. Third – luckily I didn’t use a VGC or that money definitely would have been gone.
