BOA halts my spending for 3 weeks

One of the craziest things that has ever happened to me in this space. Usually banks just shut me down and call it a day, but this incident was different. For some backstory, my wife is PLAT HONORS with BOA and have had the TR card with its 33K CL for I don’t know over 5 years now (I don’t cycle on the card much these days; I think maybe at the peak many years ago, I did 2X or 3X on it.) I got the PREMIUM Visa card last month because of the 2X promo at grocery (3.5% back with PLAT HONORS.) I got approved for the card in mid May with a 30K CL. I had heard that they were mostly okay with cycling as long as you don’t have a business card.

My first statement closed on June 5 with 55K of spend, all at grocery. I then paid it off mid month and statement closed with 6K. Then by June 14, I had racked up 32K of spend and even paid it off by then too. And that’s when BOA said ENOUGH! I knew something was wrong when both the TR and PR cards no longer worked at all. I had my wife call in on a weekend and of course the department that handled the issue wasn’t available. I just let it ride out assuming we were going to be shut down. In fact, on June 22, I saw a $95 annual fee refund on the PR. I mean, if that’s not a sign of a shutdown, I don’t know what is.

I had been waiting for a shutdown letter in the mail for the past 3 weeks and nothing arrived. Eventually on July 9, I had a recurring subscription renew. I thought that was odd since I thought the TR card was closed. Turns out, the TR was turned back on. I then even went and tested the PR card and it was back alive as well. I don’t know why BOA didn’t shut me down tbh, especially after the AF refund. Maybe they’d figured it’d be messy since we have a lot of money in ML. I have no clue.

Lesson learned here – just go slow and steady, especially with new cards.
