I had gotten the cashback version of the Ebates Visa card YEARS AGO when I could easily liquidate giftcards.com physical GCs at the PO. It was great earning 4% cashback (little less than 3% net after fees.) However, after the PO train died, I put the card in the sock drawer. Well, after Ebates / Rakuten came out with the MR version of the card, I couldn’t find an easy way to switch over. Maybe there was an underground way of doing this that I hadn’t read about it, but none of the blogs blogged about it. So I did it the old fashioned way.
I first tried to get the MR version last month, but was denied because Rakuten said I already had the card. So I closed the cash back card on 8/19/19. I then waited 30 days just in case they wanted to re-open the existing card. I applied for the new MR version on 9/19/19. The application went to pending and after calling and verifying my phone number, I was approved for a $5.5K CL (note the closed cashback one had a $10K CL.) Regardless, I’m glad I now have the MR version of this card. Here’s how it looks in my MR Rakuten page:
