Filing my first USPS Priority Mail lost package claim

A couple of weeks ago, an Ebay person sent me a message asking where his package was.  I checked the tracking number and it was still “in transit” from mid December.  That was no bueno.  I filed a ‘missing package’ claim, but I also filed an insurance claim.  With Priority Mail, you have to wait between 15 days and 60 days.  This was within that range.

Sorry I don’t have screenshots along the process, but at one point, it asked me for the value of the item, and I put in $62.95, which was how much I was paid for the item.  I thought this was odd because I thought the max was $50 for Priority Mail.  It then asked for proof of value, and I took a screenshot of my shipping label, which shows the item and how much I was paid along with my address and the buyer’s address.  It just dawned on me just now that the screenshot doesn’t have the tracking number on it.  After a week, I got a check in the mail for $68.78, which I guess includes the $5.83 shipping charge even though that was below what a padded flat rate envelope costs.  I was pleasantly shocked that the check arrived so quickly.

The other thing to note is that when you fill out the claim, it wants you to sign into your USPS account.  However, I used my mail box as my Ebay shipping address and my Ebay store name as the sender, and I didn’t have a login for my mailbox.  It seems USPS had no problems sending me the check even though there was really no connection between me and the return address on the package.

As I type this out, I just got another missing package claim on Ebay, but this time, it was for a First Class package weighing 12 ounces, which means no insurance.  FACEPALM!  Talk about bad luck…
