Never wait until the last week to sell concert tickets

This is one of those, “WTF Vinh?  You should know better!” posts.  Hey here at MPD, I post the good with the bad.  So what happened?  A few days ago, I got an email from Stubhub saying, “Oh your Justin Timberlake tickets are about to expire in a week.”  Immediately, I thought HUH?  That’s when I pulled up my spreadsheet and went PHHHHHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

Yup, apparently I never listed the other pair of JT MSG tickets on TM.  I had them listed on SH for some reason and totally forgot about them.  I immediately went to list them on TM, but TM doesn’t let you sell tickets for below what you paid, and tickets on SH were going for about HALF of face value.  I then immediately cut my price to less than half on SH – $80 buyer price while I paid about $200 all in per ticket.  Two days later, they sold.  Total loss – $250 for the pair.  Luckily I made $80 on the first pair, so only out $170.

Lessons Learned

I’ve sorted my tickets spreadsheet now to ‘date of show’ and so I know when tickets are coming up, so I can slash prices.  I start to get nervous about a month out; 2 months out is danger zone.  With a week to go, you may be looking at a 50% loss.

  1. JT tickets were tricky since they were expensive tickets and he ended up adding on second and third shows. I made 300 when they were first released then lost 215 on a pair for the second show in my area. Still came out ahead luckily.

  2. I am sitting on some for his Atlanta show – it is a long time off, Jan of next year, but I don’t think it has even sold out yet….not looking good at all 🙁
