How I did with those Valentine’s Day Hamilton Chicago tickets

Introduction

I had written about how I sold my first set of Hamilton Chicago tickets for the day after Thanksgiving a while back.  My 2nd set of tickets was for Valentine’s Day.  These had been listed for months and was finally sold on January 17, a little less than a month out from showtime.  These were on the right side of the Orchestra.  I had paid $477 for the pair.  They eventually sold for $1000 or so because Ticketmaster is paying me $900 net.  ROI was 89%.  Not as great as my Thanksgiving tickets, but I think that’s because 1) the play has been out for a while now in Chicago and 2) the seats aren’t as good as the other Orchestra Center seats.  The odd thing is that I had this listed on both TM and SH, and the buyer decided to buy from TM and pay $50-100 more than the exact same seats on SH.

New York

As I’m typing this I still have a pair of pretty expensive New York seats for Vday that haven’t sold yet.  I’ve slashed my price to where I’m only making a $100 profit on the pair and they still haven’t moved.  I’m 12 days away, so definitely in the “uncomfortable” zone.  I’ll try to hold tight until the week of and then maybe liquidate for a loss if I have to.

Chicago AMEX special seats

I know some readers bought the special call-in-only AMEX tickets for Chicago.  A reader told me he was able to get approved on SH and was able to flip them for 2X there, so try that route.

Lessons Learned

Like the previous post, it’s almost always a better resell to buy the BEST cheapest tickets versus the average most expensive tickets.

  1. Were you able to get ahold of any NY Hamilton tickets? I just sold a pair for late March in Front Mezz for $1510 after fees. Bough them for ~$400. I have a single ticket left and not sure how low to slash the price if it doesn’t sell.

    1. Yea I have 3 sets for NY. They seem to be doing quite well except for my Vday tickets. How’d you wind up with a single ticket ?

      1. That’s strange about Vday, but still a solid profit nonetheless. Good question. I bought four for my family, but my mom can’t make it so will have to resell a single ticket. Not going to be as easy to sell.

  2. Vinh, just read your interview on bowtie’s site. How do you find the time to do all this stuff with a full time job? I had a string of about 2-3 months pre-bluebird death that I hit MS very hard, and was completely exhausted, and stopped MSing even before bluebird’s death. How do you get out of the couch at night/weekends and have the drive to do this?

Edit: Didn’t want to forget to give you props, btw!

    1. Vinh went to the dark side and MMS….say it ain’t so. Just kidding – that is one of the few things I like reading over there – when he interviews people about their sites. Should get you some more clicks…congrats!

        1. Dang – the MMS article lead me to the article about the gift card running you did in LA – great piece!

Best way I ever got points was booking 2 free night certs at the Baha Mar in Nassau and they ended up not opening so Hyatt gave me my certs back and 40k in hyatt points as an apology. I’ll take $800 apologies all day haha.
