Introduction
Many bloggers have reviewed the Hyatt Andaz 5th Avenue hotel already, so I won’t rehash it much. I had booked 2 nights here using p+c and applied a DSU over 6 months ago. I then added a 3rd night using points only because I just really don’t care for paying any cash (even for the cash portion on p+c.) I also stayed at the Park Hyatt for 2 nights as well just so I could try out both hotels.
Checkin
This was our 2nd Andaz experience. The only other Andaz we’ve been to was in Maui. The lobby area is pretty small with one square shaped desk with 4 laptops. The checkin was pretty smooth. I was told I would receive 1000 points as a Diamond amenity (no other option.) I then asked what the Diamond breakfast was. The rep said it covered up to 4 people. There was no mention of a limit. He also told me that they have an unlimited wine pouring from 6-8pm every day in the lobby area. We took advantage of this a couple of times. I thought the white wine was better than the usual crap chardonnay that you get everywhere else. Sorry chardonnay lovers.
Breakfast Benefit
For 2 mornings, we had the room service breakfast since it’s comped for Diamonds. One morning, we had the breakfast downstairs. Every blogger has raved about the lemon poppy seed pancakes, but they were way too sweet for our tastes. I asked 2 other readers who happened to be Asian, and they also agreed they were too sweet for our palettes.
We had 3 people in the room, and upon checkout, there was a charge to my room. I mentioned to the rep that I had 3 people. They then were able to wipe away the breakfast charge, including the tip we had put on the bill. The breakfast downstairs was pretty limited. Our waitress said we could only have 1 main entree and a choice of juice or coffee. Thus, I highly recommend you get the room service breakfast.
Wifi
I believe the wifi was your room number and last name. I didn’t have any issues with the Wifi.
Room
On the first 2 nights, we were on the fourth floor Splash Suite that faced the library. It was pretty noisy at night; not of cars, but construction like noises. I also thought the blackout shades in the room weren’t that dark.
One thing I liked was the super high rainfall shower. While it’s not my favorite rainfall shower (Conrad Maldvies wins since the shower is actually outdoors), it was the tallest one I’ve ever been in. My wife also enjoyed the tub.
For the first 2 nights, we stayed in the Splash Suite, but for the last night, they made us move rooms. Due to pure luck, we wound up in a 2 bedroom suite WITH A DISHWASHER! At that point, my brother in law had moved out so half the room wasn’t even used. It felt pretty wasteful to be honest.
Conclusion
When we moved to the Park Hyatt after 3 days, immediately upon entry, we sort of liked the vibe of the PH better. We also liked the location better since most of our time was spent uptown. However, now looking back, I would probably stay at the Andaz over the PH next time I visit. It’s just because the extra 5K points per night for the PH wasn’t worth it. I’d rather have the more generous breakfast and unlimited wine hours at the Andaz.
The dishwasher seems like over kill with no stove top etc. How many things can you microwave? I was hoping to stay here in November but they didn’t have any double bed rooms left on points.
Mark, yeah the dishwasher is totally unnecessary. Who has dishes that they are bringing cuz there weren’t any in the cabinets.
I thought at all Andaz locations the minibar and all alcohol in the room was complimentary for everyone. Is that not the case? We only have Platinum status unfortunately, missed the match by a few days last year.
No, the snacks and non alcohol is free in all Andaz minibar. Alcohol is charged.
