Introduction
This was the 3rd and last hotel on our recent Maui trip. You can read my Andaz review and Sheraton review if you want. I had Diamond status this year, so I wanted to try out this Hyatt Regency during my trip. It was initially booked on points at 20K per night for 2 nights, but about a week or two before our trip, I randomly checked the Hyatt site and noticed p+c availability. I then asked the Hyatt Twitter team if there was DSU availability. They said YES and I had them change it for me (I really do love being able to do all that in DM.)
Checkin
We got to the hotel around 3PM, so we had no problems getting into our room immediately. The front desk rep showed us a card for us to choose 2 out of 6 items for our Diamond amenity. I went with the white wine (chardonnay) and the pineapple of course. The pineapple was delicious; the chardonnay was not good. I haven’t ever had a good hotel chardonnay, so I may switch to a red in the future. As a Diamond member, you get the same valet rate as self parking and there is a reduced resort fee.
Since I used a DSU, we got put in a remodeled suite in the Lahaina tower. While walking to the tower, we actually walked through a Macy’s INSIDE THE HOTEL(!) Not a full blown Macy’s, but a swimwear and clothes Macy’s.
Wifi
There was no need to log on and it was pretty good all throughout the resort.
Room
Our room was awesome because we could sit out on our deck and watch the luau below. Then on the other deck was the ocean. We liked the separate rainfall shower and tub. My only gripe would be is that I wished there was a door to separate the toilet from the shower and sink.
Breakfast
We ate at the Regency club room breakfast one day. It was okay. Nothing to write home about.
Make sure you pick up one of these bottles if you have access to the Regency club room.
Swimming
We actually liked this pool more than the Sheraton pool. There is a big slide that you could go down; a couple of waterfall spots. A swim up bar area. A pretty big kid’s section. If the pool was too packed, you could go to the Hyatt Residence pool next door, which although quieter can’t really compare with the Regency’s pool.
Conclusion
Solid hotel. Great pool. Not sure how a standard room would be though. While we didn’t eat at any of the restaurants, it seems they get good reviews. Did we mention there is an Ululani’s stand out by the pool too?
Stayed here back in April and had similar impressions.
Pros:
-Pretty good luau downstairs
-Good Diamond leverage (good avail of C+P and DSU, clear description of benefits on arrival)
-Ululani’s on-site
-Beach was wide open
Cons:
-Pool was mobbed and had kind of a mid-grade feel
-Regency Club is irresponsibly over-subscribed (90% full within 10 minuts of opening)
-No service/setup on the beach
Overall, a square stay and I’d probably go back.
But it feels a bit generic and some parts of the resort could use a refresh.
Yeah the pool situation could be improved, but if you try the Westin or Sheraton, it’s even worse down there. At least here, you have the Residences pool option, which had lots of empty chairs albeit a crappier pool.
We went late to the Club and had no problem with it.
It may be because all beaches in Hawaii are public (or at least that’s what I recall) – so that probably affects their decision to have service/setup on beach. I think this issue is prevalent for all the resorts on this side of the island. I forgot if the Andaz had service on the beach..I want to say yes since it’s so secluded.
