Lasik followup
From my Lasik surgery 1.5 weeks ago, things are going really well. My vision is about 20/20; maybe slightly better. However, I do have the halo issue. If you don’t know what that is, go to this site. I can still drive at night, but I’d prefer not to. It happens during the day too, especially when a car has his headlights on coming at me. From the internet, this gradually goes away and it may take 3-6 months before it fully subsides (if it fully does.)
The toughest part post-surgery, well besides the first 4 hrs that I wrote about, is not being able to rub your eyes for an entire week. You don’t realize how much you rub your eyes until you are consciously trying NOT to rub your eyes. You have to shower and towel your face a different way. For the first week, you have to use 3 different eye drops almost every 2 hours. After that, I just have to use drops every 4 hours to moisten my eyes. If you ask me if I would do it again, YES, in a heartbeat!
SUV car followup
I wrote about my search for an SUV earlier in the week. This weekend, with the feedback from you guys and my FB friends, we’ll be test driving a Volvo XC60, Lexus RX350, Infiniti QX50, Hyundai Tucson, the Mercedes GLA250, Audi Q3 and Q5, and the BMW X3. After that, we’ll pick a winner.
By the way, never ask your friends for car advice. Seriously. EVERYONE thinks their car is the best car out there. And once again, it’s all relative right? If someone who has mostly driven a Lexus their entire life would almost always rave about the Lexus. Same for the BMW and the Audi guy. The only way to tell for yourself is to test drive each one. It’s like men with watches and women with purses. Each person has different tastes.
Support the site
This is the 1 time a month where I ask you to support the site. If you love the content, you can support the site by going through the Amazon link on the right before you do your Amazon shopping. If you haven’t joined any of the cashback referral sites, you can visit the support page here. As you can see, I don’t have any credit card links and I don’t push any credit cards here on the site.
Award Bookings and Consulting
Lastly, a quick reminder that I also do award booking services as well. Probably one of the cheapest out there. Just $75 for 1st passenger and $25 for any additional passenger. I have 2 flight hacking friends who are in secret flight hacking chatrooms and know way more than me. The 3 of us can help you the book your next award flight. Visit here for more details!
So after 7 months, how’s your vision now? Did the halos disappear?
Yeah the halos went away after about a month. Right now, I’m 20/20 or close to it. I stopped using the eye drops after the first month as well. Couldn’t be happier.
I work for a huge used car company and am the guy that drives all of them when they come in to determine any issues that need handled. If you have any specific questions shoot me an email.
Thanks Wesley. We ended up getting a car already. Would love your thoughts on the deal when I post it in a couple of days.
No Problem. I updated my initial post with some different thoughts on each option so you can see if what I thought lines up with what you are seeing. I’ll keep an eye out for the post
Ah thanks for the updated post. The MB GLA has a AWD variant. I know my coworker has a newer MB and it seems to be in the shop way too often, and even a friend said the same. Agree 100% with the BMW, Hyundai and Volvo comments. I’m surprised you said the Audi has highest maintenance; I figured it’d be close to BMW.
Even the 4matic version of the GLA is based off the FWD with the RWD portion added on, thats why I made sure and say the FWD based ones. Thats just like they Hundai as you can get AWD there as well but the base platform was still made FWD meaning the both have a transaxle and not a standard transmission along with the engine being in there sideways I believe in the Mercedes as well. In order of Maintenance it probably goes Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Volvo, Infiniti, Lexus, Hyundai. If you ever have to put Brakes on an Audi SUV you will understand my ranking there. Those things are crazy expensive. All the euro cars eat tires, especially rears, so thats kind of a toss up there. IMO if I had my choice from your list I would probably go BMW, Lexus, Audi, Infiniti, Hyundai, Volvo, and Mercedes at the end. That is based off my experience along with a bit of personal opinion of course. Like I said though, shoot me a message if you have any kind of questions. Depending on which one you chose I have a range between a ton of experience with them and just a little due to the GLA being a fairly new product
Great insights Wesley, and guess who is about to change their brakes on a 2011 Audi S5… =)
Good luck, I hope they gave you the right ones. Audi is probably the worst about having 5-6 different options for the same model car
Bought my own Akebono’s online and having a tuneup shop do it. Everyone else wanted to replace rotors but reading online and looking at my own rotors, they look fine. Thoughts on replacing only brakes besides brakes and rotors?
IMO as long as they don’t vibrate or have very bad groove and or rust on them I wouldn’t worry too much about it. As long as they shop gets the old pad material cleaned off the rotor you should be fine.
I have Halo i’d say minor medium in my left eye from LASIK. It hasn’t faded since the initial healing period you just live with it. I read and my doctor told me it comes when the eye material there is too thin. They can’t do anything you just live with it. But I always had haloing from my glasses anyway.
Yeah I was asking some friends last night and most of them averaged about a month or so. One had no halo whatsoever. I guess it depends on each person.
If you’re looking at the Hyundai Tucson you should also give an Outback and Forester a try. You just might like it, but you’ll never know if you don’t go 🙂 If it’s crap by all means be honest and tell us how crappy it is. Our Subarus are almost 15 years old now and we haven’t set foot in anything newer yet, but they’re constantly the best selling cars with high marks from everyone so they can’t be that bad.
+1 on the Subi suggestion. They are also among the safest cars in the US as of today.
