Introduction
I haven’t touched on my strategy around using funny money like Kohl’s Cash. I may do it one day, but Oren does a pretty good job of it here. It basically boils down to – I like to use this ‘funny money’ for buying personal items.
Anyway, I had amassed a little over $400 of Kohl’s Cash that I had to spend between 12/26 and 1/3. I did what every good son would do – I took my mom to Kohl’s and told her to go buck-wild!
Electronics at Kohl’s
While she was shopping for clothes, I went to the electronics section. If you haven’t noticed, Kohl’s has stepped up their electronics game this year adding Fitbit, Beats, etc. The problem with the nicer electronics is that you can’t use coupon codes on them. However, you CAN use Kohl’s Cash on those nicer items.
As I was perusing the aisle for hopefully some more Sol Republic speakers that were on clearance for $29.99 but sold easily for $50 on FBA before Christmas, I looked in the locked shelf section and saw….. a Playstation 4 Batman Arkham Asylum edition. My jaw dropped like finding first class award space on Cathay Pacific…okay maybe not THAT happy because I expected Kohl’s to price it at $599 or something ridiculous. I then immediately looked on eBay and saw that recently sold listings were still going for $400.
I then went to customer service since I couldn’t find a sales rep, and asked them how much the console was. The rep told me, “I think it was $299 before the holidays. DAMN!” This was going for $400 on FBA before the holidays! Anyway, the rep walked with me to the aisle, scanned the UPC and BOOM! $349. I’ll take it!
When walking out of the store, I did the math in my head and realized it wasn’t THAT great of a deal on eBay once I factor in fees and shipping. There was a good reason why I didn’t look on FBA (which by the way is going for $390.) I won’t spell out the reason why, but if you think about it, you should figure out why.
Conclusion
Moral of story – when trying to use up Kohl’s cash, check in the stores because you may find items that aren’t on their website.
