“I forgot to pay my FIA AMEX on time, and you won’t believe what they did for me!” [insert picture of my shocked face] That was the title I was going to use to clickbait you, but that’d be too low, wouldn’t it?
Title aside, this post just goes to show, no matter how organized you are, when you are floating a dozen credit cards, you may forget about a balance here or there. My FIA AMEX statement balance closed in early May, and I was supposed to have paid off the entire balance before last week, but I didn’t pay all of it (only a couple of partial payments.) I wasn’t hit with a late fee, but I was hit with a ~$150 finance charge. I’ve only had the card since March, and this was the first time I’ve had a late payment or non-full payment. I should have really set up autopay on it, but I use an MS bank account that I never really know the balance of. I know, playing with fire here.
Before I called, I made sure to pay off the entire balance to show that I could and DID pay off my entire balance. I then called them up, told them I forgot to pay in full, and the guy easily waived the finance charge. Usually, most credit cards will do this as a one-time courtesy, so I don’t expect being able to do this again.
By the way, when I was on the phone with him, I asked if I added my wife as an AU, if it would generate a new card number, and the guy said it would not (there goes more a possibility of more AMEX offers.)
Yeah “one off” actually seems to mean “lots off” – depends on the issuer. Citi is the worst. Amex and Chase are both awesome. With Chase it’s almost gotten to the point where a late fee notice on Mint.com is my cue to pay off the card lol. And yes for Amex AFAIK only Amex issued cards generate multi numbers for AUs
Haha I didn’t realize they would do multiple times. Thanks.
