Review – Hotel El Convento in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Introduction

We had a 1 night layover in San Juan on our way to Necker Island. We landed in San Juan at around 2pm and had enough time to check out the city before leaving at noon the next day. Some travelers recommended Hotel El Convento due to its location to Old Towne. We used the free night reward from Hotels.com, which gave us something like $160 off, and we had to pay $20 ish on top of that. I think the rates are around $175-$200.

Getting to hotel

Uber doesn’t pick up from the airport, so we just took the $26 taxi ride to the hotel. An Uber back was I want to say around $10-$15.

Checkin

We got to the hotel at around 4pm or so. The checkin counter was the old school one where they hot keys in slots with your name already on them. Make sure you ask for the Wifi password.

Wifi

Our room was at the very end of the hall so the Wifi wasn’t great.

Room

Nothing too extraordinary. Had the old school charm. I did see a few mosquitoes at night in our bathroom though.

Breakfast

We were going to eat breakfast, but had to leave for the airport in a hurry so didn’t check it out.

Conclusion

The location is definitely SUPERB since you’re in right smack the middle of Old Towne. We usually walk a lot on our vacations, and if you walk ~15 minutes, you’ll get to the Sheraton, so if you want to use points, I think the Sheraton’s location is good as well (although it’s near the “outskirts” of Old Towne, if you’re a walker, it’s fine.) I would have been fine with the Sheraton if that helps.

I think if you’re staying longer, you may want to stay at one of the nicer resorts outside of town. I could see Old Towne getting old really quickly after a day.
