Why I’ve stopped using USPS Media Mail

With all the tickets I’ve been buying lately, some have come with a free CD. I have no use for the CD’s, so I sell them on Ebay for like $1 net after fees and shipping. I mainly do it to pad my stats vs trying to make money. I was using First Class for a long time and a 4 oz envelope would cost me about $3 to ship out. Then I discovered Media Mail was $2.75, so a savings of a quarter (doesn’t sound like much, but it does improve my ROI by 25%.) So I started mailing stuff out that way.

After a month of this and about a dozen shipments, I started to get Ebay messages to the effect of, “My CD should have arrived by now; it’s been over a week and there is no tracking.” The first time I got that message, I told them to wait until after the weekend, and sure enough on Monday (over 1.5 weeks after I shipped it,) it finally tracked on the USPS web site. Crisis averted.

A few weeks after that, I got a case saying, “Item not received.” I stalled on that for a bit and that eventually tracked.

Then a week after that, the person was nice to tell me it’s been 2 weeks. I gave up and just refunded her her money.

Then a week after that, I got another message asking me where their CD was. I told them to file an item not received and I’d refund. The person never filed it; I’m guessing they finally got it.

At that point, I had had enough. I realized saving a quarter wasn’t worth all the Ebay message headaches. Luckily, no one left me a neutral or negative review, but I’m sure that was bound to happen – having to wait up to 2 weeks for a package is ridiculous. And so I’ve stopped for my own sanity.
