Review – Roca Moo restaurant Barcelona, Spain

Introduction

I was calling AMEX concierge to get me some restaurant reservations for Barcelona and the rep recommended Roca Moo.  At the time, I had no idea what the restaurant was; I actually didn’t know until we sat down and they gave us the menu.  Hey, I like surprises.  Well it turns out, the restaurant is part owned or in collaboration with the Roca brothers.  Yes, the same ones from El Cellar de can Roca.  It only has 1 star for now and when we dined, only 4 other parties were dining (33%-50% full.)

Experience

Our reservation was at 7:00PM I think and we were the first ones to be seated.  They gave us the bar which was the chef’s table.  We got the wine pairing along with the more seafood menu.  I knew things were going to be good when they brought out the first amouse bouche.  Since the restaurant only had 2-3 other tables at this point, we felt very VIP and got very good service.  Things got real when the sommelier poured us a glass of champagne in one of the middle courses.  I had never had champagne in the middle of a meal before and I told him it was a “bold move,” but it paired nicely.  Also, the pigeon dish where they plated it like blood splatter was a bit…unique (tasted fine, just psychologically weird to eat.)  At the end, I was joking with the head chef that I was going to see the brothers on Friday and put in a good word. Haha.

Overall, I thought the meal was great.  My review of El Cellar de can Roca is coming soon, but I felt this meal was a lighter more casual version of that.  If you can’t make it to Girona, I think this is a good replacement.  For $470 for 2 people with wine pairing, I think it’s a great value.  Probably one of the best, if not THE best, Michelin 1 star restaurants I’ve ever been to.  Highly recommended and I would go back (I don’t say that often about Michelin restaurants.)
