Reader – Gobank axed my account due to putting eyes on the account

One of the things you learn in this game is – NEVER PUT EYES ON YOUR ACCOUNT.  This is synonymous with Slickdeal’s “DON’T CALL ABOUT PRICE MISTAKES.”  Anyway, this poor reader had to call in and that led to his account being axed.  In his own words:

Hi Vinh, I don’t know if this is worth a blog post. But my Gobank account is just axed. I had the card for a long time 4-5 years maybe. Was loading with GCs at WMT. No high volume. Like average $10k per year (maybe $20k). Was withdrawing with WMT bill pay at MO. My account has been working fine until my wallet was stolen and I to request for renewal. They wanted ID for verification. I send them ID. First they said it’s not legible then they said after review of your accounts activity it’s closed take your money and GTFO. Calling the numbers on the back of the card doesn’t lead me to a human there. Well that’s my story. Lesson to learn: Only withdrawing the money using the debit card is probably safe.

Lessons Learned

After reading the story, you can see why he called in.  I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the GoBank card since MO was working fine for me and I was scared after so many Green Dot axe stories.  Anyway, if you still have a GoBank card, take the reader’s precaution on how to continue using it.

  1. I have a similar setup to Ben, except mine is a $500 ACH from another bank account. The bill pay makes it so easy. I’ll use the ATM with it from time to time, but almost never make a purchase with it since I’m so hooked into maxing out my Samsung Pay transactions.

  2. Curious if the reader had a direct deposit setup with gobank. I have been loading $3000 per month with vgc’s onto it for years and never use the debit card. I do have a legit payroll DD setup onto the card. I wonder if that makes a difference.

  3. My GoBank cards were shutdown before they ever arrived in the mail and before I put a dollar on them 5 years ago. Weirdest shutdown I’ve ever had.
