Capital One shuts down my mom’s Spark Visa card

Introduction

Hey nothing new right?  I got back from vacation and tried to use my mom’s Capital One Spark card and it got declined.  I tried to chat with them, and they wouldn’t tell me over online chat.  I had my mom call in, and they said the account had been closed.

What happened

The usual.  Back when I was doing serious MS, I was doing about 2-3X of her CL which I think was around $10K or so.  I also paid via debit cards as well.  Either or both of those is probably the reason for the shutdown.  The odd thing is that I had stopped this probably 4-5 months ago, so it’s been sock drawered this whole time.

Lessons Learned

Even if you stop the shenanigans, it doesn’t mean it won’t come back to get you.  At least my mom wasn’t too mad about the shutdown.  And this wasn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

  1. I had a lot of trouble with them after getting the card for the recent $1000 sign up bonus. Maybe I was a bit too hasty in buying gift cards at OD as one of the first purchases and had the card blocked. Had to submit a number of identity documents to get it unblocked. Would be curious if it eventually gets shut down on further GC purchases. Maybe they do these types of checks across all accounts in waves.
