How to convert your <1 yr old Chase Fairmont / CSP to the Freedom Unlimited

Introduction

I had gotten my Chase Fairmont earlier this year before it got killed.  It was converted to the Sapphire Preferred a month ago or so.  That card has no value to me, and so I wanted to convert it to a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited.  Since I didn’t have the FU card, that’s what I wanted to get.  If you already have one and want the Freedom instead, you can follow the same steps.

Can’t convert to Freedom Unlimited

I sent Chase a secure message asking it to be converted to the FU card.  This is what I got back:

“The option to change your current Chase Sapphire Preferred Visa Signature account to a Chase Freedom Unlimited account is not available. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.”

I asked around and it seems you need to have the card open for a year to make this product change.  Ain’t nobody got time for that!  Then some people suggested I try to convert to the free Sapphire first.

Convert to free Sapphire first

I then sent a new secure message asking to change the card to the no annual fee Sapphire.  After a confirmation reply, they made the conversion.  They then mailed me a new card.  I waited a few more days and asked the card to be converted to the FU card.  SUCCESS!

Lessons Learned

If you want to convert that CSP card to a Freedom or Freedom Unlimited, ask to change it to the no annual fee Sapphire card first.

  1. In my experience, you don’t even need to wait to change from Sapphire to Freedom/Unlimited. I called to PC from CSP to Sapphire, hung up, and called back again right after and changed to Freedom Unlimited. I ended up receiving both cards in the mail on the same day in different envelopes, both with the same number, expiration, and CVC.

  2. Do you know if it is possible to convert this card to the Chase Sapphire Reserve (since I’ll likely never be below 5/24)?

I was told that I could not via SM, but I’m wondering if a workaround like this would work.

    1. I converted my CSP (which had been converted from a Chase Fairmont Visa) to a CSR almost immediately after the initial conversion happened in August. My Fairmont card had been open since July 2016, though.
