My wife’s mini July 2017 AOR

Introduction

My wife hasn’t done an AOR in a while.  I’ve mostly stopped doing them, but went ahead and did it anyway.  So let’s get started.

Citi Prestige – Approved in letter later

Surprisingly, this is her first TYP card.  I couldn’t pass up 75K points.  She got a whopping $30K CL even when she already had 2 Hiltons that were recently converted to Dividends with high CL’s on them.  I need to start decreasing her Citi CL’s for future use just in case.  I am also now re-thinking about keeping my Prestige for it’s 2nd year.  Doesn’t really make any sense for both of us to have the card.

Discover It Miles – Immediate approval for $4.5K CL

Also her first Miles card; she had an existing IT card that she got back in 2015.  Credit line is low, but it wasn’t a surprise.

AMEX OBC – Approved in letter later

I had closed 2 Hilton’s last month to make room for this bad boy.  Nuff said.

BoA Alaska Personal – Rejected in letter

Similar to my rejection about having too much credit, blah blah

BoA Alaska Business – Immediate approval

I was shocked she got an immediate approval for a $16K CL.  No phone call grilling required.

Chase Hyatt – Denied due to having gotten signup offer last 24 months

I wanted to see if she was still banned from Chase.  They sent a letter saying she was denied due to having gotten the signup bonus within the last 24 months (I was actually a month away.)  This reason gives me hope she may be back in to Chase’s good graces.  I’ll try for a Ritz in a few months.

USBank Altitude – Approved by Fedex notification

I didn’t even consider this card due to the USB RAT team being hard on MS’ers of late.  Figured I’d try it anyway just to see if I ‘d get it.  Sure enough, I knew I got it when Fedex sent a notification saying I was getting a package from Fedex.  Pretty sure they wouldn’t waste money sending me a rejection letter.  Now to find a way to meet this signon bonus…

    1. I think it’s subjective. I’d say an AOR is 3+ cards in one go. I may be thinking in the past where people would get 10 cards in one go. I guess 7 would constitute as a regular AOR and not a mini these days.

  1. As for the Alaska cards did she have any already open? And with US Bank, I read about a few shutdowns on Flyertalk and your blog a few months ago – are there newer reports of shutdowns?.

    1. Only a TR card open. I had closed all other BOA cards over a month ago. I haven’t heard of any shutdowns, but I’m sure it’s because people put the brakes on MS with USB.

  2. I have applied for 5 Alaska cards over the past year and a half and have been approved 5 times. Every time I apply for a personal I apply for a business card as well and get denied. Is there a trick to getting approved for the business card? Its the only business card I’ve ever been denied for.

    1. Not sure Tim. For me, it seems they are giving me biz these days instead of personal whereas last year, I could get personal and not business. They are a weird bank.

  3. What’s your Citi Prestige annual fee? $350 or $450. I found it worth keeping when they offered me the retention of $50/mo for 7 months (with $1500 spend/mo) which offset my $350 AF (due to previously being a Citi Gold level checking member). While that merely negates the AF, it still gets me the airline travel credit, which was the deal-breaker. Plus it allows that account to stay open 24m for a churn next year. Closing it now will reset that cursed 24m clock. 🙁

    1. $450. I called for retention a week ago and got nothing. I think it’s bec I had gotten a retention offer 6 or so months ago.

  4. Before canceling your Prestige, just keep in mind that you’ll reset your clock on all TYP cards… since the Premier sign-up bonus is decent right now, you might want to hold off until the 2 year mark to get the Premier (assuming you don’t yet have it) before canceling your Prestige. After the $250 travel credit and the always-reliable retention offers, you should come very close to covering your entire annual fee, if not the entire thing.

    1. I have goth Premier and Prestige now. And really, when’s the last time someone said, “Man I wish I had more TYP…”

      1. Feel free to generously donate your excess TYPs to me, if you don’t want them, haha. There are plenty of good uses for TYPs though… I love the JetBlue transfer bonuses, that gives you a consistently good 1.8cpp on domestic flight redemptions.

      2. Haha very true – once the 1.6 cent AA redemption died I didn’t really have a use for them anymore
