My annual retention call with Comcast

Introduction

I had gotten an email yesterday about some changes to my Comcast account, which set off my Spidey senses.  My gut was telling me it had been a while since my last Comcast retention call, and sure enough, when I logged in to my account, I was paying $89 a month for my internet plan vs $67 I had been paying earlier.  As much as I hate retention calls, I went ahead and called them up.

Contacting them

I couldn’t find an 800 phone number and so I had them call me back here.  They called me immediately.  When the rep asked how he could help, I said, “I want to cancel my service!”  Shocked, he told me to wait while he transferred me to the loyalty department.

Loyalty department

After a brief hold, I told the 2nd rep I wanted to “cancel my service so I can save some money.”  He then said, “Okay let me check to see what offers we have here…”  After a few minutes, he came back and told me he could give me the same offer as before for a price of $67.  I told him, “Okay!” and that was that.  The call took over 20 minutes due to the wait time and verification, etc.

Conclusion

While I haaaate making these calls, twenty minutes to save $22 x 12 = $264 is a no-brainer if you ask me.  Now I’m kicking myself for not doing this 4 months ago when my old offer ended.

  1. I have Comcast up here in Bellingham. I’ve been paying $39.99 monthly for 50mb internet. They tried to raise to $59.99 this month. I had gotten the earlier prices after two annual complaints to the FCC on bundling scamminess. This time, I guess they have me on file because they instantly let me bump it bac down to $39.99 a month again as long as I promised to be with them a year. Since I am not going anywhere and have no real other choices, THAT was also a no brainer. They guy claimed it was a promotional offer but at the speed he came up with it, I suspect my file has notes that I am a FCC complainer. If you are forced into bundling just to get a lower price on Internet, you can complain to the FCC as well.

    1. Are you saying if a cable company advertises a bundle price of $x each for cable, internet, phone you can just choose internet at the $x price?

  2. Just had to call Wow for our cable and internet. Got them to roll it back $15 per month to my old price and they locked it in for 12 months. Foreign call center even during the middle of the day which made it even more tedious since I had to ask him to repeat what he said often. Still debating on doing the jail broken fire stick but I love my sports which keeps me around. I hope some day soon cable goes to the a la carte method. I think they are going to need to do something to keep up with streaming companies.

  3. That’s why if I am not a meticulous person I would never put any of my internet/cable stuff on autopay. But then again I sort of overdo it – I pay manually AND keep close tabs on it.

    1. Well I had front loaded my balance with that AMEX Offer a long time ago, so never even paid attention to the bill since it was always $0. I should have just created a calendar appointment, which let me do right now.
