How I’m still doing with those Airpods and why I kept one

Introduction

The last time I wrote about selling Airpods, it was back in December 2016.  Here we are FIVE MONTHS LATER and can you believe that I’m still selling them for a profit? I’ve never seen an Apple product that is still in demand 6 months after launch and is still backordered 6 weeks.  Anyway, I’ve sold nearly 50 of these Airpods over the past 5 months.  The majority of them moved on eBay because I don’t want to waste my time driving to meet people.   My average margin per Airpod was about $25, so nearly $1,250 profit over these last 6 months.

Why I kept one

Over the weekend, the wife and I flew to Houston and I was still using my wired earbuds.  During the flight, they kept falling off my ear due to gravity and wire tugs.  The wires were also cumbersome when I had to stand up.  I was getting tired of them, and luckily I had a set of Airpods shipped to Houston a while back.  I decided to open them up and TREAT MYSELF on the flight back.  Here are my first impressions after 24 hours of using them on both the plane and in office.

  • When I opened up the case, I was sure I’d have to pair it with my iPhone and type in ‘0000’ as the Bluetooth code, but my iPhone actually immediately recognized and paired it without me having to do anything (this is assuming your Bluetooth is already on.)
  • I then played a podcast on my phone but couldn’t hear any sound from the airpods in my hand.  I kept pushing PLAY but no sound.  I thought it was odd.  I then decided to put BOTH Airpods in my ear and the I heard sound!  Apparently this is an awesome feature where if one airpod falls out (or you take it out,) the music stops playing.  Put the airpod back in your ear, the music automatically resumes playing. That feature alone makes them purchase-worthy.
  • THE FIT – No, they don’t easily fall out of your ears.  Due to no cable tug and the size of them, they actually stay in your ear better than wired earbuds!  Plus, if one falls out, the music would stop and you’d know.
  • STORAGE – As long as you keep them in their storage box, you’ll be fine.  They charge in the storage box so you should keep them there anyway.  They are also quicker to store than wired earbuds due to lack of cable winding.
  • Battery – Too early to tell, but so far, they seem fine.  I haven’t listened to them 8 hours straight or anything.  When I go to lunch or something, I’ll store them in the case and have it recharge.
  • “Noise bleed” – meaning can your coworkers know what you’re listening to.  They seem to be similar to the normal Apple earbuds in this respect, so this shouldn’t be an issue.  If it is, you should be lowering the volume anyway since you don’t want to go deaf.
  • QUALITY OF SOUND – They’re earbuds.  Don’t expect too much.  They are fine.
  • CALL QUALITY – This I have not tested, but I’m sure it’s fine too since I haven’t heard of any gripes about this.

Conclusion

I’m beginning to like them more than my Bose QC35’s, especially in the office since I can hear people walking into my cube whereas before, ppl would stand around until I turned around.  I just wish I had kept one a long time ago!

  1. I have sold about 25 pairs of the airpods. I would order 6 at a time off of Bestbuy.
Buy Best Buy gift cards off of PPGC with my ink and get 5x chase points for everything.
Then go through the “giving assistant” which for some reason would give me back $20 per order of 2 airpods.

It seems like the gravy train is about to stop since the airpods are now selling for sub $200.

  2. No issues with flight attendants telling you to turn off Bluetooth? That has always kept me from buying some wireless headphones.

    1. Nah; they don’t even know if it’s on. Plus you can simply take them off (and the music stops playing) so they can’t even tell if your BT is on or off.

  3. I didn’t know about the thing with music stopping when one bud falls off. Sometimes my wife and I each wear 1 bud each when listening to the same song on a plane. I assume this won’t be a problem?

    1. Well as long as both airpods are in ANY EAR, then the music will play. My wife and I did the exact same thing you mentioned. Then it took me 5 minutes to pry back the other airpod from her ear. Not sure if you can set it to play when only ONE airpod is in, but so far I’m glad of the new “feature.”

        1. I doubt it since even the wired Apple earbuds don’t do this (I don’t think.) You know Apple has to keep some of their magic to themselves.

          1. Gotta justify their prices too. I’m sure in a few years other companies will figure it out.

          2. Pretty cool. But competitors won’t be far behind, and competition ultimately drives down prices which benefits everyone.

    2. My wife and I keep one bud in each ear when we run together. Allows us to talk and listen to the same music. This will likely be an Apple commercial within the next 6 months ;-).

  4. I know you say they fit and stay in, but regular Apple earbuds/headphones that come with iPhones/iPods have never fit my ears, they all fall out. Did you ever have problems with other wired Apple earbuds?

    1. I have the same issue with the default Apple earbuds falling out due to either the tug from the cable or maybe I just have big ears. These don’t fall out at all due to them being bigger than the wired ones and no wire to tug them down.
