QFC, Kroger affiliate, rolls out new self checkout software, allows variable GC

Introduction

Yesterday, I went to my local Kroger affiliate, QFC, and picked up some variable (ones that go up to $500) merchant gift cards.  I walked by self checkout and noticed it looked different than before.  Instead of going to the regular checkout lane with my GCs, I decided to try out the new self checkout.

In the past, when you tried to scan a variable GC, the rep had to come by and enter in the amount.  Well it looks like the new software now lets the customer enter in the amounts.  It also let let me pay with my chip card with no intervention from the rep whatsoever.

Does it work with VGC

I went today and tested it with VGC.  Sure enough, it let me do it.  The funny thing was that while I was doing it, I took out my camera to take a picture of the screen [for you guys.]  I felt someone was over my shoulder.  I turned around and noticed the guy with a badge “Front End Manager.”  Haha oops.  I then asked if the software was new; made some chit chat how awesome I could buy these gift cards now w/o intervention.  He then mentioned that there was still a $1999.99 limit.

I don’t know when this will roll out to your Kroger affiliate, but for once, an MS win this year.  Here’s a screenshot of the new interface

  1. Anyone know if they $1999.99 is per customer per day is store dependent or chain dependent? I’m going to be in Dallas this month on business and my JetBlue card could use some grocery store love for the 2x Points via VGCs. Was thinking I’d hit more than one store while I’m in the area if the limit is per store and not the entire chain.

  2. MO without intervention is nice. I only know of one place to do it and I always feel like I’m being watched when I’m there

  3. now if only they had self checkout lanes which could do (unlimited & split payment) MOs! 😉

  4. Once these things do roll out, placing bets on how long MS’ers will have before their abuse of hoarding VISA gift cards will get it shut down. 3…2…1…

    1. Experienced MS’ers will know not to try to skirt limits for fear of being banned from the store.

  5. Come on King Soopers! Of course, I haven’t done any MS in months now. I just hate doing MOs with vGCs, the closest place to get a MO is 30mins each way for me and I work form home, so I hardly ever leave the house.
